Description
If there's ever a hawk which could come close to seeming slightly angelic, it would be the Mississippi Kite. This elegant small raptor features a white head, gray body and a black tail. The aerial acrobatics these birds perform are fun to watch. These birds love insects, and catch them in mid air with a quick "swoop and grab", and then proceed to eat them while in flight.
While they're entertaining to watch and beautiful in color, you sure don't want to get too close to one of their nests, as they will defend it aggressively. Eggs are typically laid at the end of May and hatch a month later. In my area of Tennessee, early August is a great time to watch the skies for these birds, as the parents bring the newly fledged chicks along to teach them how to hunt their prey. Last year, I counted as many as 20 Kites flying over my house at one time. I'm excited to see what this year holds!
