Description
My Little Bluebird - Our little male eastern bluebird posed for me in a recent photo shoot, and I thought he'd make a delightful subject for a painting. Male Eastern Bluebirds are vivid, deep blue above and rusty or brick-red on the throat and breast. The blue color in these birds depends on the light, and males will often look plain gray-brown from a distance. Females are grayish above with bluish wings and tail, and a subdued orange-brown breast. This species of bird often sits perched erect on wires, posts, and low branches in open country, scanning the ground for prey. They feed by dropping to the ground for insects or, in fall and winter, by perching on fruiting trees to gulp down berries. Bluebirds commonly use nest boxes for breeding and raising young, but they will also use old woodpecker holes. My neighbor has a nesting box, and this bird painting is of the male as he tried to draw my attention away from his spring home. It worked!
